Breakbulk cargo does not follow a single container size or loading method. Dimensions, weight, center of gravity and origin conditions can all change the suitable vessel, sailing and loading plan. A complete inquiry therefore produces a useful answer much faster than a request for a rate alone.
Basic cargo information
Start with:
- cargo description and intended use;
- total quantity;
- length, width and height per piece;
- gross weight per piece and total weight;
- packing method;
- cargo photos or drawings.
For heavy cargo, also provide lifting points, center-of-gravity information, base-loading limitations and any restrictions on forklift or crane handling.
Origin and destination
"China to Saudi Arabia" is normally not enough to assess a shipment. Include:
- factory or pickup location;
- preferred port of loading;
- port of destination;
- whether China inland transport is required;
- expected cargo-ready date.
If the loading port is not yet decided, provide the factory city first. The origin team can then compare workable ports against the cargo and available sailings.
Why accurate dimensions matter
Breakbulk freight is commonly assessed using revenue tons. The calculation compares cargo volume and weight, with the higher basis affecting the freight charge. Incorrect dimensions can also change the stowage position, lifting equipment and securing plan.
For irregular cargo, provide the maximum overall dimensions rather than the dimensions of the main equipment body alone.
Timing information
It is useful to state:
- expected cargo-ready date;
- required arrival or project-use date;
- whether timing is flexible;
- factory loading or port-entry restrictions.
This helps determine whether a sailing is operationally suitable, not merely whether a route exists.

With this information, the origin team can check suitable sailings, carriage conditions, China-side scope and remaining open points. If no suitable sailing is currently available, that should also be stated clearly.
